    This isn’t an ordinary blog

Blogs have been a very one-sided medium on an extremely dynamic platform for a long time. We however, want to show people that blogs can be incredible. We’re not trying to re-invent the wheel, but we want to take advantage of modern web technologies to create a surprising experience and introduce features never brought to the blog.

    Form Serving Function

Creating a blog from scratch gave us an opportunity to re-think how we approach form and function. People argue in favor of one over the other, but while planning the new Okay Geek, we wondered if we could use great design to help serve function without overwhelming it. If design doesn’t serve a positive experience and help people, whats the point?

We’ve forced ourselves to trim the web 2.0 flashiness and work to create a blog where design supports functionality, and pushes it forward.

    Control Over Content

Blogs and websites in general are pretty stale when it comes to deep down functionality. We believe if it’s possible why not try it? We want to pack as much sensible functionality as we can into Okay Geek and make it accessible, but more importantly, simplified. The moral here is most of our features are there when you need them, but neatly tucked away when you don’t.

    HTML5 Video and Audio

When a blog embeds a video it’s either too small or is misaligned and cut off; not much care is put into the “viewing experience” on a blog. But at Okay Geek we have built tools to solve this problem. Our platform gives the reader beautiful, full width HTML5 video. And with true HTML5, Youtube or Vimeo videos we post will load faster, and you can skip through them smoothly and instantly.

Support for both Youtube & Vimeo, with more to come.

    Accessibility and Filters

The internet is an awesome thing because it houses one of the most diverse populations in the world. It doesn’t know race, disability, or religion and everyone is welcome regardless of who they are. We want to make it possible for more people to enjoy our content like everyone else, so we help people with reading disabilities or sensitivity to certain language by providing custom tools. And if you’re lucky enough not to need them, you don’t see them.

    Voice to text development

We think we’ve discovered a great tool for giving users more accessibility when it comes to connecting with our editors and the community. Right now, we offer voice search, but the technology we’ve been learning about can be used for a multitude of things like large text fields, sending messages and leaving comments on articles. We think voice search can allow more people to use Okay Geek, and help even more people save time.

Chrome is the only browser that supports this feature.

    Explore content with Tabs

The new sidebar is great for discovering new things anywhere on Okay Geek, but we wanted to go further and allow you to really drill down in a way that makes sense. There are little tabs on every article that show topics and categories that relate to the content they’re attached to. When you click a tab, other articles are displayed that have that tab, but also other tabs that further help you dig down deeper into Okay geek. You can do this from the font page, or from within a post.
