Google Launches SSL Secure Search

Google Launches SSL Secure Search

Google announced today that it is extending its advanced SSL abilities to Google search. They have long provided SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) support for Gmail and Google Docs but this is the first time basic search has received SSL support.

This seems very useful, and we shouldn’t question why its here, its just another thing that’s there whenever we need it - Like at an airport, coffee shop or a hotel. Don’t want anyone knowing what you search, do you? - Read more

Google's New Video Codec WebM - Is it really needed?

WebM is a sad excuse to say screw you to Apple- I have been making movies, short films, and music videos since I was 6. I use all the most widely used programs and I know what video codecs look good and what doesn’t. H.264 has been the standard of video for a long time, and there is a codec for every type of situation and yet somehow there is another one now? Last time I checked video online was working smoothly and looks amazing with all the new HD cameras using H.264 and HTML5.

Should ISPs be "common carriers"?

Should ISPs be "common carriers"?

This is an interesting story from the Economist which sparks some questions.

“The single largest reason given for failing to purchase broadband access in America is price, and many non-adopters are stymied by hardware fees, a lack of billing transparency and the extra cost of bundled services that providers often add to internet access.”

A very insightful article on why America’s modern-day common carriers should count themselves lucky - Read more

PS3 Review - Lost Planet 2

I have one question to ask: ”How did this happen?” The original Lost Planet had flaws but it was still a very entertaining game, but it’s sequel, Lost Planet 2, has so little entertainment in a sea of problems that it drives you insane. It has a horrible and nonsensical storyline, gameplay that seems so bad that they knew it was going to make people angry, and irredeemable campaign and competitive multiplayer components that have any respectable player running from this game. I almost feel sorry for anyone who picked this up!

Apple Would be Nothing Without the 'Closed System'

Apple computers just work for a reason, not magic- Apple not allowing flash on their devices has created a huge uproar. Many people have complained but companies like Google, who have created a whole new format like their WebM codec. Admit it, people are pissed at Apple and always saying that “they are trying to shut everyone else out”; trying to create a monopoly, but there is also the other side. Apple has never been a company who tried to fully take over the market with computers.

Two weeks with Microsoft KIN

Two weeks with Microsoft KIN

” …for two weeks, I shelved my featurephone and iPod Touch, and went with just a KIN (in this case, the KIN 2). As a concept, the KIN is almost a perfect phone for teenagers, in my opinion. And in many ways it’s able to live up to it’s potential, but there are areas that don’t quite work.”

This is a great column written up by Chaim Gartenberg over at Slashgear. He talks about living with the KIN for two weeks, and how the day to day use starts to either repulse him, grow on him, or something in between - Read more
