Dear Diary, Google Wave - Part 1
Google Wave - Day 1
Finally got my Wave invite... it's cold and lonely...
Let me back up a bit to earlier this week, Monday I believe. I found a swell fellow who was willing to send out a Google Wave invite over Twitter. Dude was just shouting off on a soapbox and sending them to unknowns, which was awesome, and I was able to nab one. Well, earlier today I received an email alerting me that my invite was ready. A simple click on a link, then signed onto my Google account, and viola I was all set to 'Wave. There was a sense of accomplishment of just getting into this exclusive party, but there was one problem: I was alone in the club. Yes, I was now taking part in a new "ground breaking" communications tool, but there was no one to communicate with. Continued after the break [...]
Just to draw you a picture of how this felt, imagine getting an iPod, but having no access to iTunes; Or how about getting a shiny new gaming console, but not getting any games or demos to try out even the most basic features. That's how it feels to not have anyone to use Google Wave with, and it's a bit of a downer. And the real issue is that you don't get any invites immediately, so the only person who you CAN send waves to is the person who sent you the invite, and that's about it.
After looking up how long it would take to get my invites I found this answer:
How do I invite people to try Google Wave?
We have a long list of people who have either signed up for an invitation to Google Wave, or who have been nominated by a friend to get a Google Wave account. Unfortunately, we aren't able to pass out invites as fast as the nomination list has grown, so we're not currently adding more people to our waiting list.
As soon as we're confident that the system can accept more users, we will add a wave to your account that allows you to nominate friends and colleagues for an account. Once you have the capability to invite people, the wave appear in your inbox.
If you've already received an invite wave (you have seen it before in your inbox), you can search for "invite others to google wave" to find it. If you're out of invites, please bear with us as we work to add more people to the system. Once you've been given the capability to nominate more people, your invite wave will again appear in your inbox as an unread message
Google Wave sounds like it's going to be fun social experiment, but up until I have some friends to invite I can't tell that from what I have currently. I'll update this diary every now and then as more developments hit the wave.
