Droid triumphs over iPhone - named Best Gadget of 2009 by Time
Sorry Apple, but you'll have to settle with 4th place this year as the Droid takes the cake for Time's 2009 Gadget of the Year. (Que the confetti. Hooray!) So what does this mean exactly? Not much. Last year's winner was Peek's Email Device, and that, well, hasn't gone as smoothly as some might have hoped. But don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the Droid will share the same fate; just that winning this honor doesn't necessarily mean anything. However, it does speak volumes about the mobile market.
The iPhone itself hasn't changed all too much since its initial release - only adding bits and pieces of new features along the way - not making it much of a show stopper as of late. Is At&t holding back the phone's full capabilities, or is Apple the one who should be put on the spot for subtle upgrades and next to none innovation? By only improving on its success it hasn't pulled away completely from the pack, but instead has only breathed competitive life into all other mobile manufacturers and providers - making way for other phones to take the stage and potentially knock the iPhone off its high pedestal.
The Motorola Droid has come closest to providing a near full substitute to the iPhone, and even improving on some of its strongest features; hence why it has won Time's 2009 Gadget of the Year.
Other honorable mentions include: the Barnes and Nobles Nook, the Dell Adamo XPS, and the Panasonic G10 HDTV.
