If you haven’t grabbed your free beta copy of Windows 7 yet, there’s good news: you’ve now got 2 weeks to do so.
Microsoft made the offer Saturday evening after what started as a well received offer turned into a potential PR disaster for Microsoft as servers failed and many people were simply unable to get their hands on the promise download.
Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc writes on the Windows 7 blog:
Due to an enormous surge in demand, the download experience was not ideal so we listened and took the necessary steps to ensure a good experience. We have clearly heard that many of you want to check out the Windows 7 Beta and, as a result, we have decided remove the initial 2.5 million limit on the public beta for the next two weeks (thru January 24th). During that time you will have access to the beta even if the download number exceeds the 2.5 million unit limit. While the move will be welcomed by many, I’ve got a better proposal: why doesn’t Microsoft give Windows 7 away for free, not just a time limited beta, but the end product. A free upgrade from the fail that was Vista might go along way in winning Microsoft fans and also counter some of the damage Vista has done. Better still: open source it. All these beta’s floating around are going to get their expiry dates cracked anyway, and tens of millions of people won’t be buying a copy now they’ve got a free copy, so why not go the next step.

Facebook's developer platform has been used for a zillion marketing campaigns so far, but this one is actually dead-on hilarious.
Fast-food chain Burger King has created "Whopper Sacrifice," a Facebook app that will give you a coupon for a free hamburger if you delete 10 people from your friends list.
Burger King has put out some interesting campaigns as of late ("Whopper Virgin," "Subservient Chicken"), but this one piques our interest because of how gleefully it pokes fun at our social-networking obsessions. "Now is the time to put your fair-weather Web friendships to the test," the Whopper Sacrifice site explains. "Install Whopper Sacrifice on your Facebook profile, and we'll reward you with a free flame-broiled Whopper when you sacrifice ten of your friends.
The funniest part: The "sacrifices" show up in your activity feed. So it'll say, for example, "Caroline sacrificed Josh Lowensohn for a free Whopper." Unfortunately, you can't delete your whole friends list and eat free (however unhealthily) for a week. The promotion is limited to one coupon per Facebook account.

Yesterday at CES, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced the public availability of the Windows 7 beta release. At PC World we've been running our own evaluations of the forthcoming replacement to Microsoft's much-derided Windows Vista for some time now, and we just couldn't wait to take this new version for a spin. Here's one editor's take on the latest Windows 7 user experience...

Refurbished iPhones Now at BestBuy
Best Buy seems to have a good deal going with Apple, as it was the first retailer outside of Apple's own stores to carry iPhones, and now will be the first again, by selling "refreshed" or, more accurately, refurbished 3G iPhones.
The refurbished iPhones will be devices that were returned within 30 days by the original owner and are priced $50 less than a shiny new model. So an 8GB model would sell for $149 while the 16GB model sells for $249. The refurbished iPhones are now available at 350 Best Buy locations that have a Best Buy Mobile store.
This will also make the iPhone the only refurbished item Best Buy currently carries. Of course the retail giant tries to get around that fact by calling the iPhones "refreshed" instead, but a marketing ploy through semantics doesn't change the fact that these are refurbished iPhones.
So what does this mean for you? Well, if you are in the market for a 3G iPhone, then Best Buy is a great place to get one for $50 less than full price. Best Buy stores are far more plentiful than Apple stores, so it's now more convenient than ever to get a 3G iPhone that someone else didn't want.
