AOL acquires About.me
Splash page bio’s are all the rage right now, and apparently AOL thinks so too. About.me, the start-up project that we first got a sneak peek into about a month ago, has been acquired by AOL just 4 days after launch. There’s no specific mention as to how much it went down for, but we’re sure there were quite a lot of zero’s at the end of that check.
For those who saw our original first-look into About.me, you can appreciate what exactly the site does and why AOL would be so keen into nabbing it up:
“What about.me does is it allows people who don’t know how to create a website, or buy a doman, or any of that, and gives them a super easy way to create an online presence.” - Brandon Davenport
Where Flavors.me began, About.me finishes; A simple, one page profile of where people can find your best work, or how they can contact you is quite a commodity. And as our own Brandon Davenport previously said, it’s something that allows people who aren’t all that technically savvy to have a piece of the internet all to their own with minimal work.
Under the new AOL ownership, About.me is expected to remain as is. And when speaking about the matter, About.me’s Tony Conrad own had this to say:
“About.me becomes an important piece of their strategy to reach across and engage the web[…] We think it’s a huge advantage to become part of a suite of communication and community-driven services. This is truly a win-win for our users, investors, team and Aol.”
