App Review - Youtube Radio (iPhone)
Streaming radio is really a wonderful sign of our times, but with annoying ads and monthly subscription fees it seems they’re more hassle than what they’re worth. Youtube Radio gives you the freedom to look specifically for what you want to listen to, completely ad free, whenever you want.
Youtube Radio
App type: Music
Price: Free
Compatible: iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad - iOS 3.0 or later required
Developer: Atomax Inc.
Regardless of your choice in music service, it’s a commonly well known fact that if there’s a specific song you want to listen to at any given time then Youtube is the place to go. With millions upon millions of tunes and music videos, visiting the site and typing in what you’re in the mood for is a relatively simple task. The only thing that stops it from really becoming your default online music service however, is a lack of music playlist features. Well, if you have an iOS device you no longer have that problem.
Since the app is running off of Youtube’s search results, an internet connection is obviously required. Youtube Radio works over 3G and WiFi, preferably over WiFi, of course.
After loading up Youtube Radio for the first time you’ll see the search results to the Beatles — a classy choice to begin with. At the top are your search results in coverflow view, and on the bottom you have the same results but in a listed view. In the coverflow portion, on both sides of each image, there are two distinct icons; on the left is a video camera, and on the right is a plus (+) or minus (-).
Selecting the video icon opens up Youtube within Safari, thereby exiting you out of Youtube Radio, and loads up the video you jut chose. Click on the plus (+) symbol and you’ll add that song to your personal Youtube Radio playlist. Once added, the symbol changes to a music note which you can tap to take you directly to your Now Playing section. Search for other songs or artists and continue adding to your playlist to make Youtube Radio your one-stop-shop for all your instant music listening needs, free of charge. If there’s a minus (-) symbol next to the song of your choice that means it’s licensed and cannot be played using the app — a bummer, I know.
And with the iPhone and iPad now both supporting multitasking, listening to your playlist from Youtube Radio doesn’t have to end as soon as you leave the app. There’s no signing in or out of Youtube accounts, and at the low price of Free it’s hard to compete with.
Overall
The main issue most people have with other streaming music services is the inability to skip forward past songs you can’t stand after a set amount of skips. While Youtube Radio doesn’t have the Music Genome Project behind it, there are no limitations on listening to whatever you want whenever you want. And despite its design being bare minimum, it’s nothing that takes away from the overall experience.
