Introducing Okay Geek Mobile (Beta)
Here at Okay Geek we always put quality before due dates. There are many awesome companies we idolize that often release products late, or never at all in the name of quality — “You can release a product on schedule, but if you don’t take the time required to perfect it, it can suck forever.” — Gabe Newell
We’ll we’re finally done (for now), so what is it?
Okay Geek Mobile is a version of Okay Geek designed for the iPhone and Android. While we aren’t quite done testing Okay Geek Mobile on Android devices (there are simply too many of them), we have tested Okay Geek Mobile on Android enough to know it works just wonderfly. It’s designed from the ground up, and built on top of Mobify.me.
Core features and goodies
Custom tailored design — I have designed this mobile site from the ground up to be perfect on the iPhone and I am working to iron out all of the creases when viewing on Android. The entire site supports the iPhone 4 retina display (I was blown away at how crisp the design was) and gracefully falls back to standard DPI’s.
No matter where you come from — Let’s say you’re on your phone and you click a link to an Okay Geek article. Instead of loading the heavy desktop site, you are brought to the new mobile site, and there is no need to memorize special URL’s or shortcuts. I designed this all to just work like it always has.
Search is very important — when you have limited space to display navigation, links and content, search becomes a very powerful tool. When you tap the search bar, it slides out to let you see everything you are typing, and when your done, you can just tap Enter, or close the keyboard and the search field will slide back to reveal the search button once more.
Sharing is caring & saving for later — we get so excited when someone shares a pice of our content on Twitter, Facebook and Email, so we added these to the Okay Geek Mobile Site — and when a friend clicks the link on their computer at home, they arrive at the desktop site, or if they are on their phone they are greeted with the new Mobile site.
Also, reading super-long articles on a small screen isn’t that efficient and most of the time you just want to bookmark it and save it for later when your’re at your computer. On our new Mobile site, we’ve added a green bookmark to the top right of every article, and you can click it to save the article to your Instapaper for later.
Inline video and images — Just like on the desktop version of Okay Geek, you can view images and watch videos right from the homepage, and within articles, you can click most images to view the full size and save it to your phone. We also hope to add the ability to save podcasts and other attachments to your phone as well.
