Line2 app for iPhone and iPod allows unlimited texts and calls for $9.95/mo
Either Apple was having a good day when approving this app, or somebody fell asleep at the switch — we have no clue how Line2 managed to get into the app store. Developed by Toktumi, Line2 does what the title suggests, it creates a 2nd line for your iPhone, and turns your iPod touch and iPad into a phone. Now, there have been many different services like this, but Line2 seems to stand out from the crowd for a number of reasons.
First off, Line2 is a dual-mode calling app that can either use WiFi, or cell networks and sensibly it gives the iPhone a 2nd line. Not only that, but you get unlimited texts and calls anywhere in the US and Canada, so naturally people have grabbed this app as soon as they could — sending 1 million messages in the first 4 days.
Since Line2 can use WiFi (and will automatically switch over when a hotspot is near), the app can turn your iPod touch and iPad into full blown calling devices, capable of texting and calling other phones, all unlimited of course — and since it can use WiFi, using the app on an airplane should be fine, and you’ll be able to yack away the entire flight and text your friends.
The app is free and gives you unlimited calling in the United States and Canada for $9.95 per month, but if you’ll be doing most of your calling through WiFi, you can pay a little less. If your feeling like you want more, you can upgrade to Toktumi’s $14.95 per month deal which will give you stuff like an auto attendant, custom greetings, visual voicemail and other neat features.
So in summary, this is the best VoIP app for the iPhone/iPod/iPad out there, and at $9.95/mo it really makes a lot of sense. No other app seems to have the feature set Line2 offers, and the ability to use WiFi and 3G makes it appealing, never mind texting.
