Movie Review - Mystery Team

Isn’t dressing up with your friends and solving mysteries a cool thing to do when you’re a kid - Mystery Team is hilarious comedy by the guys over at Derrickcomedy.com, who happen to have a huge fan base over on Youtube because of shorts like The Spelling Bee and BroRape. Mystery Team, however, is a movie about three 18 year olds who think they are still 10, and so decide to solve mysteries. The three usually follow cases like, who stole the cookie, who ate the pie, or who stole a bike. This time the boys have to find out who killed a little girl’s parents so they can be taken seriously by their community.

If you know anything about Derrick Comedy then you know that their humor is vulgar but clever. The mystery team consists of Duncan, the boy genius, Charlie, the strongest kid in town, and Jason, the master of disguise. The cast includes many comedy geniuses like Bobby Moynihan from SNL, and Aubrey Plaza from Parks and Recreation. Each character brings their own style of comedy to the movie.

The movie is an indie film but looks fantastic. The only problem I have with the loom of the film is the cheesy film effect look they gave it. The filter they used makes everything super soft and almost glow-like. The cinematography was well done, and it was cool to see a movie consistently use some very long shots, especially when they worked. There are no huge audio errors and nothing really takes you away from the what’s happening on screen. Though, the only thing I did find rather annoying was that the music seemed to be the same main theme song but slightly altered every now and again, causing it to feel rather repetitive.

Overall, the film is hilarious and filled with lots of one liners; some are subtle and require you to be paying attention to understand, while others are as simple as, “according to his shirt he has No Fear”. The rest of the film is filled with stuff like stripper cocaine and dog crap, literally. I would highly recommend the film, especially since it’s an indie film and deserves some attention; it’s just as, if not funnier, than most comedies you’d see today in the theater.
