Opera Mini for iPhone hands on Video Review

This is a miracle app, and it is maybe the best thing that has happened to the app store - God knows why (or how) Opera managed to squeeze past the gaze of Mr. Jobs and squeak into the App store, and become #1 in the entire app store (free) the day of launch. This is an amazing app, not just because its fast, but because Apple may think it’s awesome too - Review after the break!

Features, and performance

I was instantly astounded by the speed of this app, but when I loaded a webpage, I was blown away (again) at how blistering fast the page loaded. Heck, I loaded T3ch H3lp on a cold start, and it loaded almost as fast as my PC (10Mbps). I did a side by side comparison with Safari, and I loaded 8 websites (Including T3ch H3lp) by the time Safari had loaded T3ch H3lp alone.

I was also astounded at how easy it was to use, from flipping through tabs to managing my speed dial, I was ready for more. Speaking of that, Speed Dial is something almost unique to Opera (Chrome has it too) and it allows you to have 9 saved websites, ready to tap when the app launches. This is a killer feature for me, since I usually browse 5 or 6 websites regularly on my iPod Touch.

Pros and Cons

Pros - The app itself is blistering fast and the internet browsing is the fastest available on any platform. The tabbing system is much better than Safari, and the look of the app is much more appealing. The amount of options is really nice, without being intrusive. No crashes to report, at all :D

Cons - Scrolling and zooming is a nightmare, basically no pinch to zoom, and the scrolling feels cheap, and thrown together. Formatting on some webpages is messed up, and poorly maintained. The app’s icon is ugly.

Should you get it?

Do you browse the internet on your iPhone? If yes, download this app right now, and drag Safari to your last page and out of sight. This is the best web-browser to use for the iPhone and only Opera can do it like this. You need to get used to the scrolling and zooming but other than that, this is a must have. Oh yeah, its available now and its free!
