Overview of the Mac App Store - Installing and Uninstalling Apps
Last week, Apple released an update for the Mac that brought the App store to the desktop. it works just about the same way as the App store on an iPhone, iPod or iPad but there are a few main differences. Overall, it’s a fantastic tool for people tired of finding apps, and doing the whole “next, next, next” thing, but there are some downsides as well — Full video after the break!
The App Store in Review
We knew what the App Store was going to be before it was released thanks to Apple’s keynote, but most of us were a bit in the dark of how great the selection would be. Being quite frank, the selection is poor, but this is normal for a young App store and the selection should improve as time rolls on.
The app itself is super clean, and really shows off Apple’s ability to make things look great, and they did a good job of keeping the same core elements of the exsisting App stores. The App store overal is very familiar, and it isn’t hard (almost natural) for anyone to get going.
Even though there are areas to manage updates, and see past purchases, you can’t un-install apps through the app store. I feel this is a huge miss for Apple as previously it was near impossible to un-install apps without 3rd party software. Apple had a real chance here to integrate a place for users to properly manage the apps on their Mac, but they blew it.
Overall the App Store, although lacking in some areas (like app management and selection) it shows real promise for the future of software on computers, and hopefully other OS manufacturers will follow. It’s a great initial release and you should definately go grab it now!
