Putting Steve Jobs back into perspective

I enjoy many Apple products and respect Apple’s mission to create the “best products in the world”, but I also understand their ethics aren’t always, well, ethical. Apple isn’t a bad company, in fact, they aren’t really different than any other company out there. We just want to make sure people are reminded about a certain someone, and the pretty un-cool things they do. We’re talking about Steve Jobs.

Now let me make something clear, this post isn’t here to attack Jobs, or say he is a “bad person”. I am posting this because I think we all need to be reminded that Steve Jobs isn’t an almighty, un-touchable savior of the tech industry. He’s a CEO. A run of the mill mechanical, egotistical and obnoxious CEO who’s job it is to keep people in check and play the front-man. The purpose of this article is to bring forth a simple event that took place three years ago that has long been forgotten.

Apple fan gets snubbed by Steve Jobs

This was taken seconds after

“[At MacWorld 2008] I saw that he was not in conversation, not talking to anyone, and poking at his phone in the middle of the public floorspace so I walked over. Thinking a girl — in this case, a fangirl, me — will never get anything if she doesn’t ask for it, I lightly touched his arm. He looked at me, and I blushingly asked if it would be okay for me to ask if I could take a picture with him. He told me curtly, flatly that I was rude. And turned his back to me. The small circle of people around him sniggered. That woman you see actually snort-laughed at me, and rolled her eyes.” — Violet Blue

Now, there has been a bunch of argument over this short tale, and some of it is pretty understandable, but most of the arguments don’t really make any sense. If a CEO of a company is approached by a fan, looks at them, and then ignores them, that doesn’t really say anything good about them as a person. But the story suggests that Steve Jobs actually called the fan “rude” and his comrades were actually “snickering” and that pretty much takes it over the top.

“That’s Phil Schiller on the right, Apple’s SVP ofmarketing… and the woman in the black sweater & whiteshirt in the middle of the picture is Katie Cotton, who ispretty much Apple’s head of PR. I sure hope she wasn’t theone snickering/snort-laughing at you, in public, atMacworld, surrounded by Apple’s core audience. Else shekind of fails at her job.” — Violet Blue

We don’t hate Steve Jobs or Apple

We really don’t, and infact we think Apple wouldn’t exsist if it wasn’t for Steve Jobs. He has changed the technology industry forever, and Apple has worked to provide the industry the first real competition. Apple is a solid company, and we never expect anything less than wonderful from them, but we just want to keep everyone in check when it comes to Steve Jobs. He is a cold-hearted CEO just like all of em’ and maybe he’s a bit smarter than most, but all we can say is “Why do you do stuff like this Steve? These people are the only reason you’re in business.”
