Skype 5.0 Beta for Mac OS X Now available

We have waited a long time, but now Skype 5.0 Beta for Mac is available, and let me tell you it was well worth the wait! The new app features a complete UI re-design and a new suite of features — all of the exsisting features have been polished and reworked, making Skype 5.0 for the Mac one of the best looking apps out there.

The entire application is now contained within one single window, so no longer is there a mess of windows for one application. Skype 5.0 also introduces group video calling, but this feature is not free (besides a 28 day trial) and the price has not been seen as of yet. Something neat that Skype has done is integrated your address book right out of the box, so you can call people right away.

Something else that is interesting is a new way to search. I found this incredibly compelling, but the lack of gesture support (3 finger swipe) was limiting, and not being able to “go back a step” was irritating, and I had to initiate the search all over again.

Overall, Skype 5.0 is a huge step above what the current version offers, and the new look is to die for. The addition of group video calling is cool, but having to pay is not. Also, the ability to view contacts in coverflow is neat, but completely useless at the same time — You should download this right now!
