SuperSonic (iOS) -- Music apps delivers 30 second clips of similar sounding artists

    SuperSonic

    App type: Music
    Price: Free
Compatible: iPhone, iPod touch, iPad — requires 4.0 software and higher
    Developer: We Are Hunted

Streaming music is where it’s at right now, but what if you’re not looking to sit back and relax and you’re more into picking and choosing new artists in rapid succession? Services like Pandora are better suited for a radio experience, but apps like SuperSonic make the “music discovery” portion flow a lot more smoothly.

After loading up SuperSonic, the app will first browse through your current iPod catalog and search for all artists, listing them in alphabetical order. Once you make a selection, you’ll be taken to another list, this time one made up out of all similar artists to the one on your iPod. You won’t get to listen to full, or multiple songs from each artists, but only 30 seconds of whatever songs are on the list. Where’s the music come from? SuperSonic connects to the API’s of EchoNest and 7Digital, the services for music intelligence and the 30 second song demos, respectively. And if you find something you like you can either favorite it or go straight to iTunes for an immediate purchase.

    Download now on iTunes
    (iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad)

There’s also options for how the app will search for music in the settings tab; toggling danceability, tempo, and popularity. Although, no matter how much we put up the “Well known artist” setting, we still were hitting nothing but indie and relatively unknown artists every tim — with the exception of some more older popular artists from decades past.
