Thoughts on iPhone 4 Reception Issues

You know, this whole thing with the iPhone antenna issue has gone too far. Mainstream media is now reporting that the iPhone 4 is dropping calls more than the 3GS almost “100% of the time.” So is there a problem with Apple’s iPhone design? Not really.

So here’s a metaphor for you: Your friend tells you, “Hey guess what, if I press my hand against the opening of the faucet, water doesn’t come out.” And you say, “Wow I never really do that in my normal everyday use but I’m going to try that!” and of course you find that the water doesn’t come out but you think something’s wrong with your faucet. From my understanding, it’s the same issue with the iPhone 4.

A couple of people happen to cover the antennas of the phone and noticed the signal drops. With the iPhone 4, its a bit different because you short out the signal by connecting two different antennas with the flesh on your hands. Apple claims that there is a problem with iOS 4 where it doesn’t properly recognise this, and allow the phone to alter the way it gets the signal. I really don’t think this is a hardware issue more than it is due to iOS 4 (thus the whole faucet metaphor). I guess time will tell if this is really big issue but I believe in the future, for most people, their reception will actually be better due to Apple’s new design.
