Do you want to Date my Avatar - The Guild

If you aren't aware of the Guild or Felicia Day then just leave right now. She's been a face to the nerdy, and a beacon of hope to who aren't quite normal. Yes, she'd make a fine wife... err...um...excuse me.

Check out the Guild on youtube or even on the Xbox marketplace. It's a funny show that would make any gamer proud. And as for their music video, it's so damn catchy and awesome there's no denying you won't eventually see it. I finally cracked and went ahead and bought the mp3 on iTunes. Support the Guild!

Buy the video or the mp3.

What did Microsoft.com look like in 1999?

Caught this on Digg the other day, thought it'd be worth sharing. Ever wonder what popular sites looked like back a decade ago? Well, Smashing App's has got you covered.

Check out Google, Yahoo, and Msn's 1999 duds here

Amazon, Google, and Apple still seem to resemble their past selves, but other sites like Microsoft got full make overs. Makes me wonder what these same sites will look like in another ten years...

    Gaming grew up? Since when?!

If I asked you to tell me the average age of a video gamer what would it be? What if you were asked that same question 10 years ago?  Your answer would probably be a whole lot different. Today's gamers are not the 10 - 14 year old stereotype they used to be labeled as. Those same kids grew up, but that doesn't stop them from buying at least one new game each paycheck nowadays. Games in recent years, the top selling games to be specific, have been heavily mature in terms of theme. Bioshock, COD4: Modern Warfare, and Gears of War have all been blockbusters, but if you notice, they aren't anything like the games of 15 years past; Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, or even Super Metroid

Gamers grew up and so did their games, Hollywood Reporter writes. However, what they're really talking about is how now that we have these gorefest type games already out of the way, maybe we can now experience some deeper, more narrative based  titles. Games cited were Alan Wake and Heavy Rain.  Young teenagers seem to like what is out of this world - blood and guts all over the place; things they don't see in their "civilized" societies. Alan Wake is possible now because of the maturity level of gamers has deepened once they've gotten a bit older - or so that's what I'm lead to believe from reading the article. Although, I know far too many people who'd rather play Madden and Halo than ever consider playing a "good" game in their life, but let's just go with this for now.

"Traditionally, in the video game world, 'mature' means about 14 years old, but that's not what were talking about now," said Matias Myllyrinne, managing director of Finnish-based games group Remedy, which created the best-selling "Max Payne" franchise and is working on the hotly anticipated mystery title "Alan Wake" for Microsoft. "If you make just the hardcore WWII games, the hardcore fantasy games -- you know, with the big-breasted women who slice people up and drink their blood -- you're limiting your audience."

So what he's saying is that the audience has widened. You have your grown up gamers, then you have the younger set, and then finally the casuals. If you're making the same repetitive violent games every few months then you're limiting to who you can offer it to in those 3 markets. When I first saw Alan Wake, what turned me on was that it wasn't another Bioshock, or Dead Space - not to say they weren't amazing - but I was glad to see a game in which its environment wasn't covered in the red stuff from wall to wall. I can't wait to try it out Wake when it comes out.

But anyway, off the main topic, I started thinking about something. Where were the 20 something gamers a decade ago? And what about the 10 - 14 year olds now? What are they playing? They seem to be stuck in a limbo of playing what their older brothers (or sisters... pfff) are playing, and what the kids at school think is good - which in my opinion is skewed ginormously compared to what my generation thought was good when I was a kid.

Anyway, it got me thinking and it might make you too.

    Final Fantasy XIV (14) Gameplay

    Woah, that looks pretty!

We've really been handing it to gaming these past few days. Lots of stories. Hey, what can I say? I'm a video game guru and it's what I love! But y'know what genre I never really got into? MMORPG's. I've always wanted to play one, but I just never could pick one that was suited for me. Though, I still remember playing Diablo 2 on an ol' piece of crap PC about 6 years ago while still connecting to Dial Up. Oh God, the horrible memories.

Anyway, how'd you enjoy first video of gameplay within Final Fantasy XIV? I know one thing for sure... it's going to be my first real attempt at playing an MMO. Oh no, watch out!

Doctor says Certain Gaming good for your health

Gaming is... good for you? I love the fact that so-called "experts" go back and forth on whether or not video games hurt you or help you. But then again that's usually when violent shooters like Gears or GTA are on the table. But what about games like Peggle and Bejeweled?

For Gail Nichols it became the help she needed to help her through her depression. Being diagnosed for years, she seldom found joy in anything - that was until she discovered the addictive and fun game,  Bejeweled. After Nichols contacted the game's creator to tell them how much it helped her, PopCap - the  game's developer - they decided to research the effects people were having while playing their game. The results were a bit surprising.

Carmen Russoniello, the man in charge running the research for PopCap, says that certain games help people relax from a stress filled day, by allowing the brain to 'gear down.' He thinks that western society is always alert and full of energy, even after a day of activities. Because of those high's it's hard for us to just shut off - the brain needs some activity to help cool it down to the necessary relaxed state it needs to truly be stress free.

PopCap is continuing its research into the mental benefits their games can help with.

PS3 Slim @ $299 - Sony not dead but no backwards compatibility

Well, that's it. Nintendo and Microsoft are finished - or so Sony wants people to think with a new SKU(stock keeping unit), new price points, and additions to the PS3 firmware (3.0) announced earlier today.

    • Old PS3 "fat" units will be priced from $299 to $399 depending on HDD size and on stores
    • PS3 3.0 Firmware coming Sept. 1st ( new XMB functionality)
    • New PS3 Slim features: 33 percent smaller - 36 percent lighter, 120 gb drive, & sports the new 3.0 firmware, @ $299 starting first week of September

Sony shouts that they are far from down and out. Although, you have to admit, since their launch they've feverishly been playing catch up with the other two players. Anyone could see this as a desperation move for their failing system. The Wii's sales were starting to slow down, but then here came Wii Sports Resort to boost sales back up. Don't forget New Super Mario Bros. Wii is on its way sometime in November; a perfect opportunity for Nintendo to regain the casual and children's market in the holiday season. As for the Xbox? Well, no real big exclusives are making their way around this year like a Gears of Wars, but we are getting Halo: ODST, Forza 3, and Left 4 Dead 2 - enough for you? As well, as big titles like Modern Warfare 2 which will nab up more 360 players than PS3 owners.

So was this Sony's last chance to sell off consoles? I do remember Sony saying the PS3 system was "a 10 year console". Hate to say it, but we're already into 3 years of that lifespan and the unanimous thought is that the PS3 is dead last in the console war. I hardly touch the Wii, but my PS3? I hadn't played it for so long I actually packed it up and put it away in to my closet. Maybe I'll give it another try when Demon's Soul comes out. Oh, and if anyone is generous enough, I wouldn't mind a copy of Infamous to review!
