Vimeo Launches 1080p for All Existing Videos
Hooray! Every person who knows what a 30mm lens is, is jumping for joy because our beloved Vimeo team has dipped their toes in the lake of true Hi-Def video and it is truly breathtaking how good the quality is, that is if your computer can handle it!
Vimeo just announced -- on their blog that if you are a Plus member and you have uploaded some 1080p videos in the past, you can now visit the settings page for those videos, and check the box that says "Re-encode in 1080p". So once you do that, Vimeo will get hard a work re-encoding your videos (on their end) and re-upload them in 1080p.
Now there are some problems - This all seems like happy, go-lucky HD fun but the fact is you will need a PC with at least a quad core, and 3 gigs of ram to even make the 1080p video watchable, and even worse it seems that when you watch in "HD" the only HD option is 1080p -- so when you re-encode your video in 1080p, that means that the public can either watch it in SD (Standard Def) or computer crippling 1080p.
Youtube has the whole HD thing down to a science, with their options being 360p, 480p, 720p and 1080p and none of them putting a real strain on your system. Lets keep in mind that Youtube launched this without any real notice and Vimeo is allowing us to use their 1080p while its still in development. Very nice of you guys!
