Rumor: New Nintendo Platform at GDC

The Game Developers Conference is about one month away, but some sources are saying they've caught wind of Nintendo possibly revealing details of a new platform at the event. Whether this is a console or a handheld is yet to be seen, but despite what everyone says about them having to release an HD version of the Wii in the near future, I don't think Nintendo is ready yet to move onto a new system.

Analysis after the break!

With hardware sales as strong as ever with games like New Super Mario Bros. on par with big named multi-platform titles like Modern Warfare 2, Nintendo doesn't have to pull out their trump card just yet. Not to mention that the current Wii still has a true Zelda title on deck, as well as Metroid: Other M, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Fragile, and other guaranteed hits games coming down the foreseeable pipeline.

On the handheld side of things I don't see a DS 2 coming our way at least for another year or two. I mean a 5th Generation Pokemon game was just recently announced by Pokemon Director, Junichi Masuda, and confirmed it'd be released later this year in Japan on the current DS systems. Which means that the international versions of those games wouldn't come out until Spring of 2011 due to the localization process, and I doubt Nintendo would release something so big so close to their next hardware jump, considering that Pokemon is only second behind the Mario games in terms of overall sales. That is unless the DS 2 offers some sort of backwards compatibility but I still feel the closest we'll see a DS 2 is Fall or Winter of 2011.

So as for the rumor, I'm not all that sure on what Nintendo would be planning if they did go ahead and announce something. But it'd sure help out the developers, giving them ample time to create something that could potentially be as big as both the DS and the Wii.
