3 Strikes Against the Samsung Galaxy Tab
With all the excitement about Samsung’s first real challenger to the IPad, there are 3 things that have me worried about this tablet. And you could probably say this about other tablets as well. But in short, I’ll keep it brief.
Customized Applications
Problem:
The main thing Apple’s IPad has going for it is it can leverage the millions of apps already in the Apps Store but it can also pull on the thousands of apps that are custom made for it. I doubt Samsung will get this type of devotion from developers of Android, even though they are the first real contender to market.
Solution:
It would’ve been helpful if Google created a ratio requirement along with minimum specifications that would allow developers to predict how their programs would fit for a larger display. This would solve the problem of further segmentation with apps not appearing correctly on certain devices due to screen size. I hope this isn’t a prelude to different app stores depending on tablet manufacturer.
True Cost of Ownership
Problem:
I see this being marketed the same way as Samsung’s Galaxy S line up. Having carrier subsidize this device also makes me worried. Why? I don’t want another full size cellular plan to go with the device. I’ll take Sprint for example. I don’t want to pay ANOTHER $69.99 on top of my current plan in order to have one of these.
Solution:
If there is a contract to be had, I would like it to be data only. No one plans on using this device as there primary phone. Ok, maybe Shaq or Yao Ming, but normal size people aren’t trying to lug this 7 inch device around everyday. I would prefer the IPad pricing model for unsubsidized tablets. And what about for us who already have an EVO or Epic? You know, with that $29.99 hotspot add-on? I think you might have a reason for me to get it.
No Cross-Platform Benefits?
Problem:
During the IFA, I notice Samsung talked up their new remote that can stream programming from the TV. That sounds great but shouldn’t that have been demonstrated with the statement, “And you can do this with this app on your Galaxy S phone or the new Galaxy Tab!” I know with Samsung’s ALL SHARE, you can do that, with media. But there was no mention of an enhanced integration. How about using the Galaxy Tab for HDTV calibration or seeing who’s calling you on your Tablet when your phone is charging? I hope Samsung allows their imagination go to wild with the being the first company to have a phone, tablet and TV on the market at the same time.
Solution:
At launch time, have an app that can provide that functionality on the Galaxy S phones and their Galaxy Tab. I really think this should be built into the Galaxy Tab because it has the proper form factor to be used on your coffee table.
These are the 3 things that concern me about the Galaxy Tab. Granted, I’ll get it because I’m a gadget nerd but very few companies can build a bottom line on nerds. Samsung wants the masses so they have to make it compelling. An integrated Galaxy ecosystem does sound sexy. Also, not having to pay an arm and a leg for it in monthly fees and the ability to use my Android apps that look good on my tablet are ideal. I hope Samsung hits a homerun. My wallet depends on it.
