If you’re a fan of the Sega Dreamcast, or knowledgeable of Japanese Arcade games, then you might be familiar with a little game called Typing of the Dead. Made by the same people responsible for House of the Dead, the point of the game was to kill oncoming zombies by typing out words using a full on QWERTY keyboard, which was the weapon of choice on the arcade and consoles rather than a standard pistol accessory or Dreamcast controller.
Borrowing from that same, unique concept, ScrewAttack — a site based off its love for retro and hardcore gaming — has developed a game that mimics that same playstyle, but instead of typing, it’s been adapted for texting on the iPhone’s virtual keyboard. It can be a little hard at first, seeing as there’s no tactile feeling as to where you are on the screen, but once you get the hang of it, it’ll be nothing but gunslinging those… gingerbread man? Yeah, also replaced from the original game were the zombies. And in place of them are killer gingerbread man whose only weakness is milk — go figure.
Playing as either Ginger, voiced by Corey of ScrewAttack fame, or the Nerd, a.k.a. “The Angry Video Game Nerd”, you’ll take on waves of cookies as they slowly move your way, texting out words to wipe them out. And let’s just say that this game is a lot better at keeping you entertained than Typing of the Dead since you’re constantly spelling out internet related phrases such as: “WTF” “OMG” “BBQ”. But if the hordes of sugar and dough are too much for you to handle, you can also do a special attack by shaking your iPhone or iPod to clear the screen of any killer gingerbread man.
In terms of audio and visuals, the game is able to stand on its own two feet with no problem. At the beginning of each wave, the characters (whom again are voiced by ScrewAttack personalities) start off the level with a saying of their own. And even in the sound effects department, certain chimes are recognizable to longtime ScrewAttack fans. Visuals aren’t top of the line, but they’re far from being heinous or outright unbearable.
Included is also GameCenter connectivity, which means achivements and high scores you can brag to your friends about. And with a game as addicting as this, it won’t be long before you have a back and forth duel with one of your friends for total gingerbread dominance.
Overall
Texting of the Bread is as unique as a game can get. While it is building upon an already established, quirky idea, it does so in a way that makes it accessible to anyone who thinks they can text faster than the average bear. And it’s also a nice work out for those who are looking to improve their texting accuracy on the iPhone’s virtual keyboard — so hey, it’s not a total loss if you keep losing out to those pesky gingerbread man. It’s better than getting mauled to death by a flesh-rotting zombie!
