Apple TV gets Vimeo and TV show streaming (iOS 4.3)
Apple has released a new update (iOS 4.3) for the Apple TV (2G) this morning which brings Vimeo to the big screen and TV show viewing bliss (although this is still a tad foggy at the moment). I have just updated my Apple TV and I can say it’s not an extravagant update by any means, and I’m not sure if it fixes some issues I was having before — but it’s still an exciting update!
Vimeo Streaming — So, everyone loves Vimeo, and I can see every Vimeo user having owned an Apple TV (they’re just that type of crowd), so I feel this is a really important addition to a large amount of Apple TV users. It functions basically the same as the Youtube app, but it has a few new things like a “watch later” queue, likes/dislikes and a more “stripped” interface (more thumbnails, less text).
Personally, I use Vimeo exclusively for personal home videos I want to keep private (vacations, birthdays, stuff like that) because I can block it to the outside world. Before, I had to mangle my way through iTunes and Airplay to share a home movie, and now I have access to all of them when I go anywhere on any TV so that’s pretty awesome.
Streaming TV shows — Apple has added a “TV shows” button to the Purchased section of iTunes, and this enables all of your shows to be moved to the cloud. How it works is the Apple TV finds all of your TV shows you’ve already purchased, and streams them through the cloud to your Apple TV (not from your computer like you used to have to do). You can also purchase shows right from your Apple TV as well, and then re-download them on all your other devices.
