Apple's App store has been hacked

Two iPhone App developers have spotted the first hacking of Apple’s app store by a rogue developer. The top charts in the “books” category of the US iTunes store features 40 out of 50 apps by the same nasty app developer, Thuat Nguyen. What is more shocking is that actual people are reporting that their personal iTunes accounts being hacked to make random purchases of that single developer’s apps…

This is the top books in the US

People on Twitter panicking about being hacked

As you can see above, people are getting pretty freaked out about the whole thing, and what is more worrisome is this is just the people reporting it on Twitter. Who knows how many people have actually been affected by the hacking, and when the issue will be resolved. The Next Web has found out that people are having their iTunes accounts hijacked and being charged up to $600 on Thuat Nguyen’s apps:

Some users who have had their accounts hacked have left comments on the apps they have supposedly bought complaining that up to $200 has been spent on books they’d never personally bought themselves. (update: we’ve now heard reports for $600+) — TNW

Thuat Nguyen isn’t just targeting US consumers anymore - reports are flying in that even people in the UK are having their accounts hijacked and forced to purchase the crazed developer’s apps:

“I’ve just noticed my iTunes account has been hacked in the past week. Someone has downloaded 8 apps and two songs totalling £61.70. The most expensive being an app called All Match by CharismaIST for £54.99! The other apps seem to be based on photographer like Camera One, Night Shot, Camera Flash Ultra. Surely Apple won’t pay out to these developers. I have changed my password and put in an email complaint to iTunes so we’ll see how it goes.” — TNW reader

What you need to do

Open up your iTunes account, and change your password immediately. Then check your recent purchases and see if there is any outstanding purchases from a developer called Thuat Nguyen. If there is such purchases, get in touch with Apple support if you can.
