We may be living in a hologram!

The idea that we live in a hologram probably sounds absurd, but it is a natural extension of our best understanding of black holes, and something with a pretty firm theoretical footing. It has also been surprisingly helpful for physicists wrestling with theories of how the universe works at its most fundamental level [...] hologramworldZOMG

Microsoft Screwed Up Windows 7 Beta, So Unlimited Downloads for Two Weeks

If you haven’t grabbed your free beta copy of Windows 7 yet, there’s good news: you’ve now got 2 weeks to do so. Microsoft made the offer Saturday evening after what started as a well received offer turned into a potential PR disaster for Microsoft as servers failed and many people were simply unable to get their hands on the promise download.

windows7FAIL Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc writes on the Windows 7 blog:

Due to an enormous surge in demand, the download experience was not ideal so we listened and took the necessary steps to ensure a good experience. We have clearly heard that many of you want to check out the Windows 7 Beta and, as a result, we have decided remove the initial 2.5 million limit on the public beta for the next two weeks (thru January 24th). During that time you will have access to the beta even if the download number exceeds the 2.5 million unit limit.
While the move will be welcomed by many, I’ve got a better proposal: why doesn’t Microsoft give Windows 7 away for free, not just a time limited beta, but the end product. A free upgrade from the fail that was Vista might go along way in winning Microsoft fans and also counter some of the damage Vista has done. Better still: open source it. All these beta’s floating around are going to get their expiry dates cracked anyway, and tens of millions of people won’t be buying a copy now they’ve got a free copy, so why not go the next step.

Delete 10 Facebook friends and get a free BK whopper

Facebook's developer platform has been used for a zillion marketing campaigns so far, but this one is actually dead-on hilarious. whopper Fast-food chain Burger King has created "Whopper Sacrifice," a Facebook app that will give you a coupon for a free hamburger if you delete 10 people from your friends list. Burger King has put out some interesting campaigns as of late ("Whopper Virgin," "Subservient Chicken"), but this one piques our interest because of how gleefully it pokes fun at our social-networking obsessions. "Now is the time to put your fair-weather Web friendships to the test," the Whopper Sacrifice site explains. "Install Whopper Sacrifice on your Facebook profile, and we'll reward you with a free flame-broiled Whopper when you sacrifice ten of your friends. burgerking The funniest part: The "sacrifices" show up in your activity feed. So it'll say, for example, "Caroline sacrificed Josh Lowensohn for a free Whopper." Unfortunately, you can't delete your whole friends list and eat free (however unhealthily) for a week. The promotion is limited to one coupon per Facebook account.

Windows 7 Public Beta First Impressions

Yesterday at CES, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced the public availability of the Windows 7 beta release. At PC World we've been running our own evaluations of the forthcoming replacement to Microsoft's much-derided Windows Vista for some time now, and we just couldn't wait to take this new version for a spin. Here's one editor's take on the latest Windows 7 user experience...
