Ballmer: Music for Xbox is not what you think it is, reports are innaccurate

Earlier we reported that Microsoft was going to be releasing a new feature known solely as “Music for Xbox”, and while information was scarce it didn’t take long for some blogs to think that this was some sort of replacement for the Zune Marketplace on the console. However, Micorosft’s sweaty CEO, Steve Ballmer, is saying that these reports are innaccurate.

During this year’s Microsoft Partners Conference, Ballmer let out of the bag some of the companies future plans for such services as Skype, Windows 8, and this newly announced Music for Xbox. The original quote that was taken for the story we posted on Monday was this:

“A recent demonstration of upcoming Xbox features showcased what we will deliver later this fall on Xbox, including voice search with Bing on Xbox to locate and access entertainment content on the console. This includes Zune music which has a catalog of more than 11 million tracks.”

Since then however, Stevie went on the record saying:

“Reports that Microsoft is launching a new music service on Xbox this fall are inaccurate.”

Notice he didn’t say that this wasn’t a replacement for the Zune Marketplace, just that it wouldn’t be a “NEW” music service. Zune Marketplace has been on the system for quite some time now, so choosing his words carefully obviously went into play here — that is of course, if Music for Xbox is indeed the marketplace’s successor.

We’ll no doubt hear more news on the subject within the upcoming months, and probably through the usual channels, such as Major Nelson’s podcast and blog
