Breaking: Steve Jobs resigns as CEO of Apple
We knew this fateful day was coming but this has hit everyone like a deer in a pair of headlights. No one expected it to come so out of the blue, especially seemingly right before the unveiling of the highly anticipated iPhone 5, and the subsequent release of the iPad 3. While each of us at Okay Geek have our own personal feelings for or against Steve-O, we’re sad to see him go as the guy we love to love, or love to hate.
Steve Jobs rarely speaks to the press, and yet he somehow manages to have a pretty good relationship with them. In effect, one of Apple’s founding fathers, as well as its prodigal son, has decided to step down as its CEO, leaving this short, straight to the point resignation letter:
“To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.”
This doesn’t come to a surprise to Apple as this has been in the works for months now. Steve made it known since his health started declining that he was building things up so he could depart while the company was riding high. Now with all eyes fixed on the 5th generation of the Jesus phone, his leave should come without much argument.
For those who still want their seasonly dose of the Jobs, his official biography will be coming out later this year — November 21st, to be exact. It’s no secret that his life has been full of controversary, what with the relationship with his employees and “friends” being the subject of many interesting discussions and even a movie - Pirates of Silicon Valley. But Steve wants to set the record straight, and tell the story from his point of view.
Regardless of what he says or what happens to Apple from this point on, we can only wish the best for Steve — acknowledging him as one of the smartest visionaries ever seen in the business world.
