Could Skyfire finally bring Flash to the iPhone?
Apple has whole-heartedly agreed that Flash will never come to the iPhone, but what if flash content could be viewed without the need for an Adobe Flash installation? Opera Mini paved the way, penetrating Apple’s fortress of solitude. So it stands to reason that the precedent set should apply to other mobile browsers, right? That’s what the guys at Skyfire believe.
Similar to Opera Mini, Skyfire renders websites on a central server, ultimately resulting in quick playback on a mobile device. However, unlike Opera Mini, Skyfire has the ability to render both Flash and Silverlight. Therefore if Skyfire chose to implement an iPhone version of their browser the long debacle surrounding flash on Apple’s mobile products could (potentially) be resolved.
Currently, Skyfire has made no definitive announcements, but as the quote displayed below shows they are surprisingly perplexed by the idea. What are your opinions on the matter? Do you think Skyfire has a shot or will Apple gun them down mid-range?
Everyone at Skyfire was heartened by this decision by Apple, to open up their platform and believe this sets a solid precedent for additional innovation in mobile browsing from other companies.
[…] The Skyfire team has been watching the Opera submission and the iPhone/iPad market closely, and this will certainly accelerate our strategy on iDevices.
