Diaspora - The First Facebook Killer is Coming

diaspora* /dī-ˈas-p(ə-)rə, dē-/This news about a new Social network emerging has thrown me back a little, because I know that competition in the Social network industry is close to impossible. Once you are on top, there is literally no stopping the snowball effect until the network itself falls flat on its face. For these guys, there is a chance, a chance for them to change social networks forever, and for us to get our privacy back! - Video after the break…

Four New York University students have a vision to build Diaspora, “an open source personal web service that will put individuals in control of their data,” or essentially the anti-Facebook.

As you can see from the video above, these guys are looking into some of the outlying issues with Social Networking, namely privacy, which seems to be thrown on the back burner 100% of the time. They are planning to launch a network that houses private networks within itself, the purpose of it being you own, and are responsible for everything you upload and share.

Users will get there own profile I imagine, and then will use Diaspora’s new way of storing content which is to say, private and separated from the social aspect. What is really interesting is that their new startup managed to gain steam quickly, so fast in fact they raised $100,000, and managed to be featured on every major tech publication around, including the New York Times.

If anyone can beat Facebook at their own game, these guys can - for the single aspect of privacy, which they want to get back for themselves, and the public who so desperately need to be woken up to the fact that Facebook can do whatever they want with our data. The numerous privacy disasters in the past year have set me looking for a non-existent alternative, but now I have found that alternative, and all I have to do is wait, and its for my own good.
