EA Support: "We can extend your 1 year download limit, no problem!"
EA has come under heavy fire ever since they announced (very manipulative) DLC for Battlefield 3, which sparked a boycott. Things went completely sour when EA announced they’d be leaving Steam, and that Battlefield 3 would never make it to the Steam online store (other EA games have been removed)… but that wasn’t all the bad news. EA also announced that Battlefield 3 would be an “EA Origin” exclusive, and once people discovered what EA Origin was about, they immediately revolted.
Why is there a “one year download Limit?”
The EA Origin TOS states that “the products and services we provide on the website may be downloaded for at least one year after you have completed your purchase”, and people are taking this statement strictly as “you only own your game for a year”, and this is wrong. This is simply legal jargon used by EA to cover their asses. When you download a game, it’s yours for as long as you want, but if EA Origin were to close shop, you would have a year to get your affairs in order.
On the flip-side, Valve does the same thing for Steam, stating that they can terminate their service (or part of it) at any time with short notice, while EA gives you a year head-start. From a simple legal standpoint, it appears that EA gives you a little more skin in the game than Valve — but both are just trying to cover their butts, and are probably going to do the best for the consumer if S-hit-the-F — but what happens when you ask an EA reresentative to remove the magical “1 year limit”?
