Foursquare is getting more dynamic with comments and photos

Foursquare has announced a second major update for their famous location service. In this update they have included a better interface and the option to allow photo uploads. Foursquare did an amazing job implementing this feature, and also partnering with Instagram, PicPlz, and Foodspotting. Although this feature is nothing new in the check-in world, this seems to be a very successful venture for Foursqaure. Gowalla has had this feature for about nine months and Gowalla recently released data saying they hit the one million mark for photos uploaded.

Along with this new update, Foursquare launched a commenting system. Facebook places has seen the most success with commenting on check-ins due to the obvious integration with Facebook, and Foursquare’s commenting system is like any other but it’s still something that really should have been there since day one. Minor updates were also included such as the ability to share places via email and text messages. The checking-in UI is completely remodeled and the “we have you here” UI has changed.

The application seems to be running much faster, and it appears to be much smoother than before. Previously I have noticed many errors trying to “gather your location” on the iPhone, but those seem to have disappeared. Gowalla’s most recent update was also very slick, one of the sexiest applications for a social platform. Sadly I have yet to play with the application because jailbroken users can’t use the Gowalla application - so shout out to Foursquare and essentially every other app in the world for working with jailbroken devices!

Overall, the application seems to be a fantastic change for Foursquare. This was a much needed update as some of the features should have been there since day one. Foursquare has been posting on their Twitter account about the great feedback they have obtained with their update and I for one give them two thumbs up! This is a must download if you are into location based services.

What do you think of the new update? Are you a Foursquare or Gowalla user?
