    Internet and ferrets on the rise, mermaids and bacon on the decline

    If you haven’t heard, Google has launched a new service called “Books Ngram Viewer” which allows you to search books dating back to the 1800’s and beyond. Essentially, the Ngram viewer enables you to compare multiple words and see how often they appear in our literature over decades and centuries. In our case, we searched numerous unrelated words, and we got some interesting results!

     

    Why Google Ngram exists is without reason, but it does exist and it’s so fun to play around with. I have had an absolute laugh attack searching different crazy words and seeing how they stack up against each other. Personally, I recommend searching food, animals (definitely cats), names, and dates — all at the same time. May the power of the internet be with you…
