Future PS Vita firmware could allow remote play for all PS3 games
We saw the first glimpse of cross-platform gaming between the PS3 and the Vita back during E3 with a game called Ruin. What that showed off was the ability to start up the game on the PS3, save it and quit, and then load up that same game — along with your save file — on the Vita to play on the go. While many questions were raised by that demo, it opened up the possibilities of what could be done between the two systems. Well, now we’re hearing about a future update to the Vita that would let you play your entire PS3 library remotely.
During this year’s Tokyo Game Show back in Septemeber, Sony did a little show on how Killzone 3 could be played remotely via the help of a Vita system. Not only that but Eurogamer was given some hands-on play where the Vita could also be used as a secondary controller for co-op play, namely on LittleBigPlanet 2.
Now Eurogamer is saying that the demonstration they were given was just a foreshadow of a future firmware update that will let you play all your PS3 games on the Vita system. How this will work exactly isn’t entirely sure. Will it require a digital version or will a retail disc copy do just fine?
But if you’re expecting to play all your games natively in beautiful HD you’re going to be saddened to hear the Vita will only upscale PS3 games to 480x272, which just happens to be the resoultion of the original PSP, despite the Vita’s OLED screen capable of displaying up to 960x544.
The idea of remote play isn’t anything new for the playstation portable platform. The first PSP could communicate with its parent system, though it was limited to transferring videos, music, and only compatibles games, like downloadable PS One classics. But things have changed drastically since the last PSP generation, and the ability to stream and cloud save could alter the way we play games on the go forever if someone can find a way to do it right. Is Sony on the right track with this?
