GamePro magazine and website set to shutdown next week, goodnight sweet prince
Long before the internet, gamefaqs, or message boards, there existed gaming publications that were essential to anyone who called themself an avid video game player. Back in the day the big boys on the block were EGM, Nintendo Power, and of course, GamePro. During the early to mid-90’s it was all about which kid on your street had a subscription you could borrow from or how much information you could soak into your brain during trips to the super market. Cheats, walkthroughs, and previews to the latest games were what made any self respecting kid a big shot amongst his friends. This hits personally to us, and it saddens us to hear that the fine folks at GamePro are closing up shop after more than 20 years in the business.
“Thank you for your loyalty, support, and participation in the GamePro.com community. At noon on December 5, 2011, the U.S. version of GamePro online will shut down as an independent site. GamePro will become part of PCWorld.com (http://www.pcworld.com/gamepro) offering gaming news, reviews, and how-tos from the PCWorld team. Thank you to the entire GamePro staff for their hard work and dedication.”
Exact details on just why this move was decided on weren’t divugled, but it may have to do with the fact that GamePro had been struggling for the past couple years — recently switching its format from monthly to quarterly back in July. Parent company IDG will be moving some of its staff over to PC World, also owned by IDG, where they will continue to write reviews and other like articles for the site. The rest of GamePro’s employees will be laid off, and to them we can only salute and say thank you for the memories.
After that bit of depressing news, we thought it’d be cool for those who never got a chance to see the beauty that was GamePro in its glory days, or for those of us who want a nostalgia trip, to take a gander at a retrospective look at a number of GamePro mag’s, form front to back cover, dating between the years 1993 through 1995, by one elbryan42. You can watch his entire playlist (total of 45 videos) of that series here.
