HTML5Rocks - Google launches the largest HTML5 showcase
See that new “HTML5Rocks” logo? I made it spin using CSS3 (mouse-over it) - and you may not know that CSS3 is the very close sister to HTML5, and usually never leaves its side. Over the last 5 months, HTML5 and CSS3 have been gaining major ground, and have begun to earn their place as viable web technologies.
Here at T3ch H3lp, we use CSS3 for almost every core aesthetic function of our site, but we have yet to dip our feet into HTML5, which is starting to get us excited. Luckily, Google has recently launched the new “HTML5Rocks” website, which has more goodies than any snobby web designer can shake a stick at.
Some exciting stuff that they have added to the showcase is a full blown playground, that will allow you to mess about with HTML5, without the risk of “messing something up”. I have spent about 10min playing around in this, and I must say, its pretty cool to see that a few changes to a line of code can give you a wicked notification system, which is not limited to the browser!
Some interesting stuff I found
There are some really neat tools on the site, such as a tutorial on create interesting “To-Do list” apps, a guide showing how to add audio through HTML5, and also a wicked inventory of resources. I also found a neat chart showing how HTML5 has been supported since 2008, and a cool CSS3 generator (if you don’t quite get all the coding stuff (or if you don’t have time)).
Another cool thing is the ability to add any font you’d like to your website using CSS3 Web Fonts, (which I may be putting to the test soon!) Other cool stuff includes CSS3 columns, and the ability to embed videos without the need for flash (that means it works on the iPad). Also you can grab someones current global position using the GeoLocation API.
