Nowadays, in-ear headphones are a dime a dozen. Some boast good sound but have poor design and build. On the other hand, others excel in the looks department, sacrificing good sound. Very few can find the perfect balance between both without also breaking the bank. Do the a-Jays Three fall into this class?

Our Impressions
The a-Jays Three come in a flat plastic canister finished in the rubberized finish of the headphones. In order to open it, you have to remove a sticker in the lower right corner of the back, press a lever, and slide up half of the box. The first things you’ll see are a user manual and hard carrying case. If you lift the manual, various silicone tips, the headphones, a headphone splitter, an airplane adapter, and the headphones in their respective compartments will be exposed. The point we’re trying to make is that Jays headphones make a damn good first impression. It’s almost as if Jays has an employee who’s sole job is to open potential packages and design the best unboxing experience (they have one at Apple).
Design and Build Quality
The a-Jays line of in-ear headphones features one of the sleekest designs out there. They have a simple and almost monolithic design. Each chunky earbud is coated in a matte black finish and a glossy plastic cap that curves to fit your finger when you place the earbuds in your ears. The overall construction of the headphones is very solid; we might even go as far as to say they feel ruggedized.
The lengthy, highly rubberized, flat cable is fantastic in the non tangling department. However, the coating is cause for a great deal of cable noise which can be distracting. You won’t find any remote or microphone on the a-Jays Three - you’ll have to get the a-Jays Four for that addition. The cord ends at an L shaped gold plated jack which prevents the cable from bending and snapping.
Sound Quality
The a-Jays Three are all about bass. You get a nice boomy sub bass along with the punchy mid bass. While the lows are really exaggerated, we wouldn’t say that it detracts from the listening experience a whole lot. In fact, most people who are not looking for reference material will enjoy the smooth, lush sound of the headphones. They’re warm but not annoyingly muddy or compromised by the added bass. The sound signature seemed to change after we put the headphones through a significant amount of burn in. The thick rumbling bass line was still there but the overall audio reproduction seemed more balanced.
Accessories
The accessories that Jays pack in with the a-Jays Three are thoughtful and add good value to your purchase. The interesting part is that this particular set of accessories only come with the Three model (the Two’s come with the two adapters but no case and the top of the line Four comes with none of them). The swiveling hard shell case is great for toting the earphones around and the adapters make sharing music/listening to music on an airplane much easier. Beyond those, the various silicone tips should be able to suit the majority of the people who buy these headphones.
Overall
The a-Jays Three are simply a lot of fun to use. You obviously won’t get the most accurate audio from a pair of earphones marketed as “heavy bass impact” but the exaggerated lows will actually make the listening experience more pleasurable for many. Besides the sound, the a-Jays line also gets design right - they look and feel amazing, not to mention the non-tangle cable that actually works.
