Microsoft not sure what to do with Zune player or its brand
Since the introduction of the iPod, any device that would dare compete against it was doomed to failure since its release; Microsoft’s Zune player has turned to be no different. Though Microsoft seems to be a little dillusional on the subject, maybe even indecisive. After officially submitting a support page yesterday that clearly stated the Zune player was to be discontinued and the Zune brand to remain for the marketplace with the same name, the company pulled that page and appear to be back-pedaling.
According to the support page that WinRumors initially found, Microsoft’s feelings regarding the future of the Zune player was officially this:
“We recently announced that, going forward, Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy, and that we will no longer be producing Zune players. So what does this mean for our current Zune users? Absolutely nothing. Your device will continue to work with Zune services just as it does today. And we will continue to honor the warranties of all devices for both current owners and those who buy our very last devices. Customer service has been, and will remain a top priority for us.”
Since then it appears that the company may be re-evaluating its position with the player by taking down said page. Not only that, but the official Zune Support Twitter account paints a completely different story altogether:
So what’s the word on the street? Did a company memo actually get published ahead of time, or was there simply a miscommunication regarding the future of the doomed, yet sexy music player? Or could it have been the fact that after Apple’s press event on Tuesday, and their unthreatening new line-up, helped Microsoft realize they’ve been given time to catch up?
