News Corp. plans to buy UGO and merge it with IGN
While the world attention is fixed on news that the world’s number one terrorist, Osama Bin Laden, has finally been taken down, News Corp. (IGN’s parent company) has been busy making plans on acquiring UGO.com from Hearst Corporation and merging it along with IGN into one presence before letting it take flight on its own.
Not much information has been divulged outside what Peter Kafka let out of the bag concerning the multi-million dollar acquistion on the blog AllthingsD. Both entities being discussed have nothing to comment on at the moment, but I’m positive we’ll no doubt be hearing something soon when the bigger parts start moving. Apparently, the core idea of this deal is to create one mega-site that focuses primarily on video game news and culture. Whatever happens to the rest of IGN’s media blogs and resources is up in the air, but we’re sure they’ll all be part of the “culture” bit.
The finality of the site will be a mystery, since we’re not sure if News Corp. plans to sell off the media giant once it’s on all cylinders, or simply have it picked and put in someone else’s hands when the time is right while the corporation still has a main stake in it. Regardless of what goes on we can only hope that IGN ends up being better than where it’s at now, a soul-less destination for those who don’t know any better. But we can’t help but like Jessica Chobot! Yeah, she’ll do just fine wherever she goes.
