Razer Goliathus Fragged Speed Edition (anti-fray border) review

The Razer Goliathus has always been one of our favorite gaming mousepads; I’ve been using one for well over a year now. For good reason too - it’s precise cloth surface, size options, and even the dashing snake graphic have attracted many a hardcore gamer. But Razer just had to find some way to make it even better. The Goliathus we’re taking a look at today features a special anti-fray border. To quote Razer, “wear enemies down, not your mouse mat”.

Features

  • Slick Cloth Weave For Unbridled Speed And Effortless Control
  • Anti-Fraying Stitched Frame Extends Mat Durability
  • Pixel-Precise Targeting And Tracking
  • Rubber base for a secure grip on smooth surfaces
  • Standard size - 355mm x 254mm x 3mm

Our Impressions

The Goliathus comes in an ominous black cardboard box of typical Razer fashion. Features, testimonials and images of the product cover the packaging and a circular hole on the side allows you to “feel the difference.” The actual mousemat is rolled up inside, accompanied by … nothing. No fancy stickers or manuals are packed in to distract you from using the product.

The unit we received was the medium sized Goliathus so we didn’t have any issues fitting it on our desk. We simply plopped it down and it quickly flattened out. The surface of the mat is tightly woven and smooth to the touch. A vibrant green “fragged” graphic covers the greater part of the mousepad while the Goliathus logo resides in the lower left hand corner. If you’re worried about the design interfering with mouse tracking, don’t be - it’s actually part of the weave and not later imprinted on. The rubber base of the Goliathus is textured, which prevents it from sliding around on your desk during intense gaming sessions. In fact we attempted to shift the mat and only ended up shaking the desk. The mousemat actually seems to be a tad thinner than our older Goliathus, which is rather disappointing. We enjoyed the thickness on the previous generation as it provided comfort and also prevented desk imperfections from intruding on mouse tracking. That said, this 3 mm thick pad is by no means thin and should hold up fairly well. The medium size was actually quite perfect for our gaming needs. Those who wish to save some space will look for the small size while the hardcore will go for the large. For extremists, Razer also sells a stretched out “extended” size.

An anti-fray border is the newest addition to the Razer Goliathus and it actually works quite well. Our year old pad had begun to show signs of wear on the edges and the heavy-duty woven border is bound to make a difference in the long run.

Overall

Overall, the Goliathus Speed Edition is one of the greatest gaming mousemats we’ve used. The tightly woven cloth surface allows for excellent and speedy tracking while the base securely grips on to your desk. Excellent build quality is matched with dashing good looks. And of course, the new anti-fray border is in effect, guaranteeing a longer lifespan.

Pro’s

  • high quality surface
  • grippy base
  • new anti fray border

Con’s

  • none to speak of
