Review - Official Twitter app for iPhone

You remember Tweetie, right? That peppy little Twitter client for iPhone and iPod touch? - Well, Twitter has purchased Tweetie from atebits, and has now teamed up with the infamous atebits developer (who is now part of Twitter) and they have given it a very snazzy facelift with the addition of what I imagine are features only Twitter can put into an iPhone app. Lets give a round of applause for the lone atebits developer Loren Brichter, who has given us much more than a better Twitter experience.

Review after the break!

Why is this app so great?

Well, first off it’s the official Twitter app so that’s got to amount to something right? Besides that fact, Twitter for iPhone is one of the most simple, and intimate experiences that you can have with the social media cloud. It provides the classic Tweetie interface, along with some slight UI changes and super useful tools that don’t come in normal Twitter apps.

The design work is fantastic, and the interface is easy to navigate, read and manage. Everything you do in other Twitter apps, has been simplified in this one - even signing up for a new account is easier, or attaching photos, links and Geo locations to your Tweets. I have never used an app that made me a little more excited about Twitter again, and that’s something special.

What could make it better?

I have a few bones to pick with this app, one of which is the management of Re-tweets - just the thought of Re-tweeting on this app makes me shutter, because of the fact that if you want to Re-tweet something, you cant edit the text of your tweet! You tap “Re-tweet” and then poof, its on your profile without any way for you to add your 2 cents, or add an updated link.

Also, you can’t see your own Re-tweets on the home screen of the app for some odd reason (it could be a bit clutter-ish, I know, but at least an option to do so would be nice). Also, the inability to see the number of “unread Tweets” in a red circle in the corner of the app’s icon on your iPhone home screen would be nice as well. Another issue is that there is no indication of “read” and “un-read” Tweets, in the app itself.

Final verdict and Download

Download this app now! Its free, so you have nothing to lose, and even better, its a great way for new users to be introduced to Twitter on the go - so if you have a mom who wants to get into Twitter, get this app for her.

This app is a charming experience, which packs every feature you need, without making it feel heavy and cluttered. It is designed and built exactly how Apple would do it, and I would not want anything more than a cup of coffee, and some Twitter for iPhone R&R after this review is done. This should be the Twitter app you use every day.
