Rumor - Nintendo and Sony negotiating for 3G tech in 3DS and PSP2
We heard about this story before from Nintendo’s own President, Satoru Iwata when he mentioned in passing that the next iteration of the DS might have built in 3G capabilities for enhanced features on the go. Well, if a report done by the Wall Street Journal is to be believed then NTT DoCoMo, a major wireless carrier over in Japan, is not only working with Nintendo, but also is in talks with Sony to bring 3G technology over to their forthcoming portable handhelds.
As mentioned earlier, this isn’t something new coming from camp Nintendo, but without any solid word from Sony that they are even releasing a new PSP2 any time soon this comes as a bit of a surprise. However, we did recently get some sort of nod in respects that Sony is hard at work behind the curtain on a new Playstation platform. Whether this ends up being the PSP2 or the PS4 is yet to be seen, but what we do know is that the pressure is on Sony after Nintendo all but crushed its competition with not only an impressive list of upcoming games during their E3 press conference, but with their show stopping introduction and reveal of the 3DS.
How this entire 3G business gets integrated into gaming handhelds will be something to watch. Though what this goes to show is how the iPhone has certainly gotten everyone’s attention with its increasingly amount of games available on its app store and the ability to connect and play online with players across the globe using At&t’s 3G network.
Sony and Nintendo, the ball’s in your court.
