Rumor - Nintendo redesigning 3DS, adding extra circle pad
So get this, after already slicing the 3DS by over 30%, the legendary firm is thinking about redesigning the 3DS and adding a second circle pad… or so goes the rumor. Actually, it doesn’t end there! The 3D handheld has gone through so much recently, could these stories be based on fiction or is Nintendo really that conflicted?
According to 01net.com, who also was the first to break the Project Cafe working name for the Wii U, is again breaking some ground on a few rumors that might make you think twice about Nintendo competancy about the 3DS.
- Nintendo Adding a Second Stick, Encouraging Devs to Build for it
Now this is the bigger of the two rumors and also the most difficult to figure out. The sources are said to name two possible outcomes: 1.) Nintendo is designing a future model of 3DS with a built-in 2nd circle pad, or 2.) They plan to sell a $10 add-on that will make a 2nd stick possible on the current hardware.
Also, what makes this story a little confusing is the mention of the word “stick” rather than circle pad. How would a circle pad even fit on the fight side of the system without getting in the way of the power button?
As for Dev’s being asked to develop new titles for this oncoming new feature, I’m not sure this is really true. I think we would’ve heard something more substantial before, unless Nintendo just made the decision recently to go through with the hardware redesign.
- 3D Games Not a Must, 2D 3DS Games on the Way
We actually have heard this one before, and I believe even Nintendo CEO and Pres., Satoru Iwata straight out said this was true. While the 3DS’ main seller is its ability to display 3D images, it’s not a must for all games coming to the platform. Taking advantage of the handheld’s raw power instead of its 3-Dimensional view, 2D exclusive games could certainly have a little more ‘omph!’ to them than those that require twice the energy to be run on the 3DS.
Whether these stories are a reality remains to be seen, but the add-on second circle pad seems pretty farfetched to me. So again, take these tales with a grain of salt.
