SGP Incredible Shield Ultra Coat Review (for iPhone 3GS)
If you’re one of the many iPhone users who wants to keep their device in pristine condition but simply hates adding extra bulk with cases, the SGP Incredible Shield Ultra Coat may be the right protection for you. Whereas rigid screen protectors are usually included with cases and soft films sold as a full body kit, the Incredible Shield combines the rigid frontside with a soft rear. How does this pair work?

The simple blue box includes a plastic tray containing a spray bottle and rubber/plastic squeegee as well as a paper folder containing the screen protector and the rear film.
Following the instructions printed on the paper folder, we began to apply the screen protector. The spelling mistakes didn’t exactly boost our confidence but at least they weren’t as embarrassing as the translation errors found on the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The screen protector is sandwiched in between two pieces of plastic with pull tabs – one to protect the surface and the other to keep the adhesive fresh. Note that the screen protector protector is tinted blue giving the actual screen protector a shaded look. This is not the case, as it is actually clear. The package contains one front protector and one back piece.
The screen protector is a breeze to apply. One of the simplest we’ve ever done, in fact. The rigid piece simply rolls right onto the screen after aligning. A word of advice though - start with the home button hole rather than the earpiece. If you’re a few degrees off on the earpiece, everything will be fine while covering a portion of the home button would bug you every time you use the phone. If you’re wondering about air bubbles, we’re glad to report there were none and the surface smoothed out itself.
Moving on to the rear, we had to spend a little more time applying this piece, evenly spraying liquid onto the film. Coverage is very complete on this film, wrapping around corners and the volume buttons. The chrome rim is also protected by two strips of film separately applied. After ripping off all these parts, we were left with two circular bits of film. After pondering for a while, we realized these were for the home button. While seeming like a petty addtion, this actually plays a large role in usability. With the screen protector applied, the home button would be recessed at its normal position. Problem solved. In terms of air bubbles, you needn’t worry much. What you cannot push out with the included squeege should clear out after a while. The largest of air bubbles (larger than the Apple logo), however, will take a couple of days to disappear.
Although not being super durable, the Ultra Coat did perform relatively well in our daily use/abuse as well as some light scratch tests. The front will no doubt last longer that the back due to its more resilient material. The film will actually smooth over any blemishes you might have previous inflicted upon your device but large scratches and cracks will still prevail.
Overall
Our opinion of spray based films still remains relatively low in comparison to products such as the BodyGuardz Dry Apply. However, the SGP Incredible Shield Ultra Coat was quite enjoyable to use and we could certainly say we were satisfied at the end of the day

- Fairly scratch resistant
Con’s
