SGP Ultra Silke Soul Black case for iPhone 4 / 4S

Silicone cases aren’t usually the most wisest choice to make for encasing your delicate iPhone 4 in. However, we know that there are times when you need to go on a budget. In that case, we decided to check out SGP’s Ultra Silke case. But as with any iPhone case (regardless of material) there are 3 speciic areas we’re looking at to give you the best advice possible on whether this is something we think you should spend your hard earned frogskins on; 1.) protection, 2.) style, 3.) functional design.

    Features

    • Simple - no bells or whistles
    • Flexible, easy to install
    • Durable silicone material
    • Comes packaged with goodies (screen protector film, microfiber cloth)

    Our Impressions

The iPhone 4 continues to impress with its design and elegant style, as seen in Apple’s choice to continue with an unchanged exterior for the iPhone 4S. Protecting the rear, glass backing is a must for any 4th and 5th generation iPhone owner. So does that mean that just any case will do the job? Well, not exactly. Hence, why we’ve decided to check out SGP’s Ultra Silke Soul silicone case for the iPhone 4 / 4S (provided to us by the fine folks of the CreTouch store).

As with most silicone cases, there’s not a whole lot going on in terms of there being any extra features besides a simple case that holds to your phone nice and close like. It slips on without any fuss, and you don’t have to worry about it slipping off during use or when fiddling around for your phone in your pocket.

The silicone material is quite durable; during our time with it we had no fear of it tearing or the case getting itself damaged, well at least not anytime soon, that is. The entire case is coated with a high polymer that gives you that matte look, as well as a destractor to lint and dust. However, seeing as this is silicone, we can’t say except from experience that cases of like material don’t last for years.

The case features access to all of the iPhone 4’s ports (headphone jack, speakers, mute switch, rear camera). These spots are large enough to give you just the right size for any charges or headphones to get where they need to be. As for the volume up / volume down button and hodl buttons, they’ve been covered up with silicone buttons. While we’d prefer cut-outs, access to the actual chrome buttons below, as with the other ports and such, the rubber buttons don’t detract too much from the experience since when pressed they did work — it just takes some getting used to.

When it comes to protection however, I must admit that we’ve seen a lot better. You’re talking about centimeters of protection between your glass backing and this case. If you drop it don’t expect to feel 100% insured that this little case will do the job. It will protect from nicks and scratches from common wear and tear, which is obvious that this is the reason why you’d be getting it for.

Also included with the case is a Steinheil Ultra Crystal screen protector film (MSRP: $$13.99), as well as a cleaning cloth — now isn’t that nice? We say so! Especially since Steinheil film protectors are high quality and some of the best we’ve ever felt on our sexy iPhone screens.

    Overall

In the end, you’re getting a nicely priced silicone case that does the job. It gives you the functionality you want in a case that lets you charge, change up your volume, and hold it comfortably without a huge dent in your wallet. But don’t expect it to protect your Apple investment much beyond the common wear and tear of everyday use.

    Pro’s

    • Easy to install / remove
    • Features access to all necessary ports
    • Comes packaged with high quality screen protector

    Con’s

    • Volume control and hold button covered with rubber buttons
    • Made out of silicone, may not last in the long run.
    • Doesn’t offer much protection beyond nicks and scratches
    Where to buy

    CreTouch Store — MSRP: $19.99
