Steve Ballmer - Kinect will make it to the PC "in the right time"
Talking to the BBC, Steve Ballmer confirmed yesterday at CES that the Xbox 360’s Kinect camera peripheral wouldn’t stay in the gaming world forever, and eventually would bond together with the PC, and in effect Windows.
The interview with Baller and the BBC can be seen here.
When asked if Kinect and PC connectivity was something that Microsoft was looking into Ballmer had this to say:
“We’ll support that in a formal way in the right time, and when we have an announcement to make we’ll make it.”
With all the hardware hacks and software applications we’ve seen in the past months, the stuff modifiers and developers have been able to create in the open community with Kinect has been nothing short of amazing. But this whole idea of Kinect officially joining forces with a PC and the Windows platform isn’t entirely a new.
Early in Spring 2010, we first got wind in leaked powerpoint images that Windows 8 would indeed be implementing a sort of gesture based control system as well as facial recognition for fast log-in’s into the OS and applications. What other device that we know of could do such a thing other than Microsoft’s own Kinect?
And while Ballmer may be staying mum on how and when it’ll happen, we’re certain that as features continue to be released for the Kinect and its current partner, the Xbox, we’ll begin to see a transformation into what can be possible on a computing platform.
