STM Bags Convoy Medium laptop backpack review

Choosing a laptop backpack is tough. You’ve got to find the right combination of laptop protection, space, and comfort. STM Bags, a company based in Australia, has been making bags for over a decade and they describe the Convoy as “old school design meets high tech laptop protection.” How true is this statement?

    Features

    • Easy access, concealed laptop section
    • Main compartment for books, paperwork, reading materials
    • Adjustable suspension system for a comfortable fit over the long haul
    • Tuck-away rain cover for any unexpected downpour
    • Front utility pockets for glasses, iPod and cords, drives, etc.
    • Fits most 15” laptops

    Our Impressions

The Convoy comes in a large plastic bag to ensure that it doesn’t get damaged in transit.

The backpack itself features a relatively simple design. The front side consists of two smaller utility pockets at the top and one larger one under that. These can be used for portable gadgets, cables, and other small tidbits. Rather than zippers, they’re held shut by four large buttons. Directly behind the front pouches is a compartment for your power brick, pens, and such although it’s large enough for an iPad or netbook. Go further back and you’ll find the main compartment. The front area has a solid flap held on by Velcro which secludes your laptop from the rest of the section. Stretchable cloth surrounds the laptop and secures it in place. The entire interior of the laptop division is lined with felt to prevent any scratches. The space is adequate to fit most 15” laptops (we tested with a MacBook Pro and Toshiba Satellite) unless you’ve got an especially thick one such as the Alienware M15x. Sealing the divider with Velcro leaves ample space in the main compartment for books and other documents. On each side of the backpack you’ll find a small pouch about the size of a device such as the Nintendo DS. One very special pouch at the bottom holds a parachute style rain cover.

The backpack is made with a tough canvas material and is sold black. The interior features a gray waterproof cloth material. The back area of the backpack is well padded and leaves a strip down the middle in case you get sweaty. The straps are nice and firm; the right strap has a pouch on it for a cellphone or iPod. Sternum straps are integrated into each steap, adding extra support. The top handle is quite durable as well.

The Convoy is pretty comfortable to wear for long periods of time, even during activities such as biking. Despite this, it isn’t the lightest backpack, especially with a 15” laptop inside, so you will feel the weight after a while. One nice design aspect about the buttons is that there’s a strip to stick your finger under so as to easily align both sides of the button and pinch them shut. The zippers also feel very solid and have cloth strips on them for easier zipping.

    Overall

The STM Bags Convoy Medium laptop backpack is one of the best we’ve used in a while. It’s durable, looks great, and provides more than adequate protection for your electronic gadgets. And a lifetime warranty guarantees that this durable backpack will last or else STM Bags will replace it for you.
