t3ch Review - SGP Leather Argos iPad Case
When you have a $500+ computing machine you better believe you’re going to want a good case to protect that investment. And that counts double when we’re talking about an Apple product. The SGP Argos wants to be not only that extra insurance between a spill or a drop, but it also cares to make a statement that you care about what you let your iPad wear.
Product: SGP Leather Argos iPad Case
What it says it does: Prevents your mobile from scratches, damages and dust. The microfiber interior helps keep your mobile clean and sleek.
My Experience
When I first got my hands on the Argos I was finally able to tell the difference between a conveyor belt iPad case and one that’s hand crafted. The level of design and treatment this case gets is unmatched in anything I’ve seen in a case to date, and it shows in just about every detail - for better or worse.
When inserting my iPad into the case for the first time, the Argos seemingly cradles it into a nice snug fit by means of each of its four corners, locking it down well - well enough that the first time I tried to remove it, it took me a few minutes. And once the iPad was secure I’ll tell you this, it wasn’t coming out no matter what I did to it. All the ports and buttons are easily accessible when fitted into the Argos, and it makes me wonder just how they were able to come up with something so precise, so much so that the iPad just feels like it belongs in it.
While it has a style of its own that stands out in terms of quality and appearance, the Argos’ practicality is limited. For instance when the iPad is held in “portrait mode” in your hands the case’s flap doesn’t symmetrically fold behind the iPad. It’s a little difficult to explain but the flap doesn’t fold back the way let’s say a book cover folds back, and instead it just sorta hangs there. It makes me wish that the flap was removable somehow.
The flap can also be used as a stand for the iPad when wanting to rest it in landscape mode on a flat surface. Only problem with that however, is that you run the risk of it falling over at any moment due to how flimsy the stand is in terms of holding up the heavy iPad.
And in terms of questionable design, on the inside of the flap there’s this piece of writing entitled “Emerald Tablet of Hermes” which begs the question: “Why did SGP decide to have this printed within their product?” It’s unnecessary and I’m not a fan of how it looks when it’s laid out flat and open for everyone to see. The writing is a story that runs the length of the open flap from top to the bottom, and I’m not sure where SGP was going with it but it gives me the feeling of pretentiousness.
On the outside the Argos has an elegant look; its leather exterior gives it the added pinch of flavor that makes it stand out from among countless iPad cases. And on the inside it does quite a lot to keep anyone’s iPad safe from accidental drops or whatever may come its way. However, when it comes down to being practical it only feels comfortable to use when holding the iPad in landscape mode. In any other positions just feels awkward, and for $70 I don’t think it’s what I lot of people have in mind when wanting to get something to both protect your iPad, and give it the same feel it would have when it’s not wearing a case.
