t3ch Review - Thinksound ts02+ headphones

Headphones to me have always been the gatekeepers of which sound waves make the trip from your media player of choice to your ears. So what makes a good pair of headphones then? Well, the kind that do their job and yet feel like they aren’t there. The ts02+’s fit this exact bill.

Product: Thinksound ts02+ 8mm headphones with microphone
What it says it does: ts02+mic headphones feature an in-ear 8mm high-definition driver with integrated microphone and call control.

My Experience

Thinksound isn’t someone you hear of everyday in the world of tech or gadgets, but with their simplistic design of products and eco-friendly attitude, they should be.

To get to business however, the ts02+ headphones are earbuds with a very slick wooden housing, with high definition drivers that minimize outside noise but keep in every single note to every song you ever listen to while wearing these earphones. Yeah, they’re that good.

About three inches down from the right earbud is a built-in remote control, with a microphone and an answer button which can be used  with iPhones and iPods to pause and play, as well as select the next or previous track using two or three clicks respectively. The call control features are compatible with the following devices: iPod, iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPad, iPhone (3G, 3GS, 4), Macbook, Droid II, Droid X, Droid ERIS, HTC Droid Incredible, Samsung Galaxy S, Blackberry (with 3.5mm standard headphone jacks only), Motorola A1600, HTC EVO, and more.

In terms of audio quality, once I secured the earphones for the first time I felt something I hadn’t really experienced before, and I can only compare it to something as simple as filling in a gap that you didn’t know was there. The ts02’s remove the boundaries that customarily separate you from the music you’re trying to enjoy; they become the music and drown out everything else in the world. With what is called passive noise canceling, it’s virtually impossible to distinguish any sound coming from outside the headphones unless of course someone is screaming right next to you at the top of their lungs.

While listening to soft acoustic sounding stuff, like from bands such as Death Cab for Cutie and the Maritime, vocals seep into the ears like butter with absolutely nothing being lost within the transfer from iPod to ears. And even when giving a listen to bass and beat heavy music, like club jams or hip hop tunes from people such as Usher and Chris Brown, the ts02’s hold up perfectly.

It should also be noted that they’re called “in-ear” headphones, so if they feel a bit intrusive, almost as if they go so deep that you feel violated, it’s okay because they’re meant to do that. That being said, y’know how it feels when you plug your ears with your fingers and then you hear yourself talk? Well, that’s something you’ll have to get used to once these fella’s are snuggly fit within your ears.

In the box comes the headphones themselves, 4 differently sized silicon ear inserts to fit onto the earphones, a carrying pouch, a clip to keep the headphones from moving around, and a small instruction leaflet. The packaging is quite the bee’s knees, and really sport the Earth-friendly mantra that Thinksound is shooting for.

For those interested, their site reveals that the packaging used was made with reusable resources, minimal materials, and the headphones are PVC-free.

To sum up my thoughts, the ts02+ headphones by Thinksound are practical, lightweight, and offer an audio experience better than any other headset or earbud listening device I’ve ever owned. As I mentioned on the outset of this review, the best kind of headphones are the type that can distinguish between music and outside disturbances. The ts02’s are able to do this in a way I never thought possible and all under $100 bucks.

The only thing I can say bad about them is that sometimes you are so entranced by the audio quality that you just might miss out on phone calls, smoke alarms, and babies crying on your next flight… but then again, that last one might not be a bad thing.

The ts02+’s are available in two colors: silver cherry and black chocolate
