The Best Apps for Switching to Sprint's EVO 4G

How do you do today? It’s Thursday, you’re focused but you need to occupy your time - so you don’t become a stark raving, brain eating Zombie perfect for target practice on Z-day. Don’t worry we got you covered! So you’ve made the transition over to Sprint’s new EVO 4G handset and you want to make the swich to HTC’s behemoth without any hiccups. Well, I just happen to have some suggestions for you…

First, here is a couple of Apps I would recommend

My Backup Pro

A paid app that is definitely worth it in my humble opinion. This will make an easy transition without going through the unenviable task of downloading each and every app you had previously. But if you like that sort of thing, who am I to stop you. Backs up all your apps and even sets your Scenes back (if you’re running Sense UI by HTC)  sans wallpaper and lock screen but that’s minimal. Great app and I whole heartedly recommend dropping the money on this one.  Voted as “One of the Best Apps of 2010” by CNET UK! Did I also mention that it will restore your SMS texts and call history too? I love it!

Titanium Pro

Now, for my 1337 folks, and let’s be honest, you’re only reading this to see if I am going to pick your app of choice, aren’t you?

Chances are if you have a rooted Android phone then you already have this. If you don’t, I don’t see why.  It comes in free and “donated” flavors and it’s a staple on various Android community boards.  According to Joshua Allen of AbsolutelyAndroid.com, “cons: lol what cons?”

If you’re a former iPhone user and you’re coming to Android

First thing, not every app that is on the iPhone is on Android and second, not every app will run like its iPhone counterpart. If you keep that in mind then your transition will be a painless one.

As for transitioning your contacts, I’d recommend this article by Matt Brian over at WillINeedIt.com. Very good article in using Google contacts and ITunes to make the transition easier.

Google Listen

And while we’re at it, just because you’re picking up the EVO 4G doesn’t mean the end of podcasts either. There are two great way to continue to get your fill of your podcasts subscriptions - and I actually use both of them.

The first app I recommend is Google Listen. It’s a free, and all you need to do is imagine an iTunes shortcut to podcasts; there you have it. You can subscribe to podcasts and download them straight to your phone. You have the choice of either streaming or downloading the podcast of your pick. If you are in a 4G area like I am then I suspect you’ll be testing that out.

iSyncr

Second app is for those that don’t mind using iTunes but still want to get their podcasts and music onto their new EVO 4G, and it’s called iSyncr. It’s a paid app but will sync and connect to your iTunes library and allow you to transfer your podcasts and music to your Android phone. This is something I also use because as of yet Google doesn’t have any of the iTunes University videos and recordings that I’m a fan of. So pick this one up as well.

I hope this helps whet your appetite for Friday morning. Tomorrow, we’ll talk about accessories and how not to over pay for certain items (HDMI cable, I’m looking at you).
