Things we were most excited about today at CES 2012
This time every year, CES hits and the entire tech blogging world goes nuts with tons of posts and liveblogs. Here at Okay Geek, we’re not going all out with CES this year but still think it’s important to select a few things we’re the most excited about at CES each day. Today marks the official start of CES so hit the break for our top picks!
CES 2012 - Day One
Razer Project Fiona
While companies like OnLive have managed to get hardcore PC games running on tablets such as the iPad via cloud streaming, the Razer Project Fiona is the first tablet that is made especially for hardcore PC gaming. Powered by a third generation Intel i7 processor, it runs Windows 8 and provides enough oomph to power most of today’s most taxing games. But what makes it unique is the custom developed user interface that is designed to work with the large multitouch display and the two handle-mounted joysticks on the sides of the tablet. The controllers are similar to the PlayStation Move controllers or even Razer’s own Hydra motion gaming sticks; they feature force feedback by THX for a more immersive gaming experience. As of right now, it’s a proof of concept but something similar is expected to launch in Q4 of 2012 with a price tag of $1000.
Galaxy Nexus for Sprint
This one seems like a less major announcement because we’ve already seen the hardware before but the exciting part is that the Galaxy Nexus is now official available with a contract on two the US national carriers, with a third GSM model available unlocked and compatible with AT&T 3G bands. This means that the original dream set out by the Nexus One is coming true - each carrier, except for T-Mobile, has its own Galaxy Nexus. This is important because the iPhone is no longer exclusive to AT&T in the US as it is also available across three of the major US carriers.
Android phones with Intel processors
Yes, it’s finally happening. They’re putting Intel Atom chips in Android phones. No, not the Atom chips found in current netbooks but a new type of Medfield architecture Atom chip. What exactly does this mean for us? The quickest way to explain would be to direct you to the Anandtech benchmark page for the Z2640 processor. Yes, it’s really that fast. We’re not sure how battery life will be on this new generation of Intel smartphone but we really can’t wait for an Android 4.0 device with these types of specifications!
The first Android 4.0 Medfield phone to be shown off is the Lenovo K800. It features a 1.6 GHz Medfield processor and 4.5 inch 720p display, sporting a custom Lenovo UI. Motorola has also signed a multi year deal with Intel to manufacture Medfield based Android smartphones. The first one will come towards the end of 2012 but we expect to hear more about this at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year.
