Walmart "temporarily" price cutting Xbox 360 this week, sign of things to come?

Nintendo’s coming out with a non-GCN compatible version of the Wii for what we assume is a reduced price, Sony’s slashed $50 off its current PS3 model — now we’re just waiting for Microsoft to do somthing similar, especially with the holidiays coming up. Though they have continuously denied that such a mark down would happen, yet Wal-Mart has an advertised Xbox deal with $50 mysteriously being shed for this week. Is this a sign of things to come?

Currently, Wal-Mart is running a special deal starting later this week (starting Aug. 28th and ending Sept. 5th) in a flyer that Joystiq has recently got their hands on. Cutting $50 off the usual asking price, the 4GB Xbox 360 S w/ a bundled in Kinect is going on sale for a measily $249.99.

Microsoft has since responded to the price cut with a statement:

“Walmart made an independent decision to implement this temporary price cut. We’ve made no announcements about price drops, and do not discuss our pricing plans in advance. Xbox is the number-one selling console in the U.S. for 13 of the past 14 months, and is showing record growth. With an incredible line-up of games and entertainment, we’re expecting the biggest year in Xbox history as the best-selling console worldwide.”

While they’re calling this a closed incident of an independent retailer going bonkers for sales, one can’t help feel that this could be a test of sorts to see how consumers will respond. Microsoft is touting their number #1 spot heavily but if they want to keep they’re going to have to slash off a few pennies to lure in those who have been holding out.

Not to mention my launch day 360 has finally been acting up on me, and I need a slick, new replacement.
